STEAMfest 2025: Building Alabama’s Future Workforce

NexGen Crane & Rigging proudly participated in Alabama STEAMfest 2025 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, joining hundreds of students, families, and educators to inspire future careers in STEM and skilled trades. The event connected classroom learning with real-world opportunities in construction, heavy equipment, engineering, and industrial technology—fields at the heart of what we do every day.

NexGen displayed a 110-ton Tadano crane at the Alabama STEAMfest 2025, hosted at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Inspiring Future Builders Through Hands-On STEM Learning

Thanks to two of our operators Chad and Erik, students had a unique opportunity to explore the engineering and physics behind a 110-ton crane. Our team walked visitors through the real work that happens on construction sites and industrial projects across the Southeast—where precision, safety, and problem-solving are key.

Attendees could:

  1. Examine rigging gear and lifting components used on heavy projects
  2. Learn about load calculations, balance, and safety controls
  3. Talk with NexGen’s skilled operators about careers in crane operation, rigging, and construction

For many students, this was their first time connecting classroom physics and math lessons to an actual piece of heavy equipment—and realizing those skills can lead to rewarding, high-demand careers in Alabama’s growing construction and manufacturing sectors.

Building Career Curiosity and Workforce Awareness

We believe in supporting workforce development through community involvement. Events like STEAMfest give young learners the chance to see how STEM learning directly applies to the skilled trades—from crane operations to industrial contracting and rigging services.

“Our industry needs problem solvers, builders, and innovators. By showing students what we do, we’re helping them see that a strong career can start with curiosity, hard work, and technical training—not just a four-year degree.”
Brent Thompson
CEO of NexGen

Why STEM and Skilled Trades Go Hand in Hand

The future of construction and engineering depends on a skilled, safety-focused workforce. According to national data, the U.S. construction industry faces one of the largest labor shortages in decades, particularly in crane operation, rigging, and heavy equipment maintenance.

That’s why NexGen invests in safety, training, and education—values reflected in our commitment to workplace safety standards and employee development programs.

Through events like STEAMfest, we’re helping students discover that careers in the trades are not only viable but essential to keeping Alabama and the Southeast growing.

Thank You, Alabama STEAMfest and UAH!

This year’s Alabama STEAMfest featured nearly 100 hands-on exhibits, robotics demonstrations, and live science shows—all designed to ignite curiosity and highlight pathways to STEM and technical education.

NexGen is proud to have contributed to this mission and to continue supporting vital construction and manufacturing industries through community outreach, education, and technical excellence.
